"A fairy tale…
How else could you describe a space made up of elements known only from fables and films? It is a kind of fiction, a theatre with actors presenting the humdrum of their lives in their own set design, using exceptional forms. Raising their heads and smiling, they shout at me: Ali Baba! How are you? Then they disappear in the abyss of murky Middle Ages.
I have registered these phantoms day by day, and night by night, as they appeared in light and ambience that I recalled from my childhood fantasies. I hurried to steal as many images as possible before that beautiful dream was gone."
"Prosperity for everyone. A second car, a second house, every year a trip around the world or a sabbatical, both partners a career and an average of 2.2 children. If we believe the media, it’s all possible. All we need to do is get on board of the high-speed train of modern life. Both in economy and business class, time managers coached by their personal gurus create a paradigm within which deadlines and quality time complements each other. Obviously, this just-in-Time Thalys train only stops at the main stations of major cities. The landscape in-between passes by before the eyes of the traveller like a grey line.
Anke decided not to get in. like Harry Potter boarded the train to Hogwarts on platform 9 ¾, not visible to plain mortals, Anke took the train to “Complete me”. The pleasant sluggishness of this journey breaks down the grey line like a prism, showing us the landscape in magic colours. Under the purple sky and the brown sun we are introduced to others that have missed, or rather decided no to take, the Tempo Thalys. Lovely people, special people, beautiful people. Being one with nature. Their loyal friend the dog. People take their time. They reveal themselves in front of Anke’s camera. We see emotions, fantasies and small miracles. Almost like a fairytale, but more so, real life."
Miranda July and fragments of her movie:
"Me and you and everyone we know"
trailer...
...and one of the fragments I'd like to use for the exposition:
Christine Jesperson is a lonely artist and “Eldercab” driver who uses her fantastical artistic visions to draw her aspirations and objects of desire closer to her. Richard Swersey (John Hawkes), a newly single shoe salesman and father of two boys, is prepared for amazing things to happen. But when he meets Christine, he panics. Life is not so oblique for Richard’s seven-year-old Robby, who is having a risqué internet romance with a stranger, and his fourteen- year-old brother Peter who becomes the guinea pig for neighborhood girls— practicing for their futureof romance and marriage. In July’s modern world, the mundane is transcendent and everyday people become radiant characters who speak their innermost thoughts, act on secret impulses, and experience truthful human moments that at times approach the surreal. They seek together-ness through tortured routes and find redemption in small moments that connect them to someoneelse on earth.
Me and my short movie:
"De vriendenclub"
introduced by a photo:
I have chosen for my personal work from the period IV, which is just the beginning of my own fairytale about the real world and a friendschip, that knows no boringness and excusess; makes our life colourful and active and no matter what, remains authentic and true. The movie shows that people of diffrent nationalities can become best friends and respect each other hanging out together and creating their own conception of reality. So I've decided to place my work next to the artists mentioned above. All of them are looking for something magic that can be captured in the reality, that shows not only the stark reality like it is but adds the secret drop of fancy to develop a beautiful world where dreams might come true. So is the exposition meant to be, to make us think on a little bit abstractive way, to go wool-gathering and try to take the viewpoint of an artist to be able to watch and see the magic whiff surrounding us.
The work of all of us will be presented in one room. So will be placed the work of Tomek Sikora on the opposite wall of the work of Anke van Iersel, and mine on the opposite wall of the work of Miranda July with this exception that the projection of our movies will be shown alternately.
